Compact reciprocating saws are all the rage these days. Several companies, including Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Porter Cable have joined the fray with their own variations. In this case, the Porter Cable PCC475B Clamp Saw comes as a bare-tool-only. Retailing at around $90, it’s not inexpensive. And, the 18 volt battery and charger are both sold separately. If you don’t already own them, you’ll be shelling out another $35 for the charger plus $78+ for the LX battery or $80+ for the EX 18 volt power pack. That being said, is this tool worth the money?
First, let’s look at some features:

The interchangeable battery feature is a nice benefit, since it won’t leave you out in the cold if you already own the older NiCd packs. The variable speed trigger is smooth and seemed responsive during usage. The keyless blade change is a snap to use, and saves time & aggravation, avoiding ever having to look for a lost allen wrench.Obviously, the Porter Cable PCC475B Clamp Saw’s claim to fame is the clamping foot. It makes cutting anything from copper pipe to wooden dowels easier and safer – in some respects – since there’s less chance of the saw slipping off the material. Notice I said “LESS CHANCE”? You still need to firmly clamp your work in place and take normal common-sense precautions to avoid injuring yourself or damaging the work.
