Tap and Die Set

Tap and die sets are used to create or repair a thread. Taps are used to make internal threads inside a hole. Whereas, dies are used to create external threads on screws or bolts.

Using a Tap and Die Set

Below we have outlined the process required when using taps or dies in order to create a new thread or repair an existing thread.

Tools Required:

  • Tap and Die Set
  • Drill
  • Drill Bits

Step 1 – Choosing the Right Tap/Drill Bit

Firstly, if you are repairing a thread or creating a new thread, you must re-drill the hole. When drilling a new hole or re-drilling an existing one, it is important to use the appropriate drill bit size which corresponds to the tap you will use. In order to do this, you should check the table which usually comes inside the set to get the correct drill size or view one here.

Step 2 – Drilling a Thread Hole

Ensure the hole is centred and drilled as straight as possible. Use the chosen drill bit to create a new/unthreaded hole.

Step 3 – Tapping a New Thread

Once you have drilled a new hole or re-drilled the existing one, attach your chosen tap to the turning handle. Be sure to add some lube or oil to the tap to help with the threading process. Insert the tap into the hole and begin to turn the tap clockwise, take your time during this part of the process.

Step 4 – Selecting a Die

If you are wanting to thread or rethread a bolt or screw, then you will need to use the die tool. Once again, the most important and initial step is to select which sized die to use. In order to do this, you should use the die that refers to the size of the bolt or screw you are adding a thread to.

Step 5 – Using a Die

Now you have the correct die, attach it to the turning tool. Once this has been completed, secure your bolt/screw, whatever you are rethreading or adding a thread to and attach the die to the top. In the same process as using a tap, Be sure to add some lube or oil to the tap to help with the threading process. Then, begin to turn the die clockwise, take your time during this part of the process.

 Taps

 Types of Taps

There are a number of different types of taps, all of which have specific uses and along with this, each type will be available in multiple different sizes for a range of applications. These are some of the most common types of taps:

  • Plug – these taps are used to cut threads into blind holes and have just one tapered thread.
  • Second – these taps are the most common and are used to start the tapping process and have 3-5 tapered threads.
  • Taper – these taps are used for hard materials that require slow tapping and have 8-10 tapered threads.

Die

Types of Dies

Dies come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be used for a wide range of different threading applications. There are two main types of dies, solid dies and adjustable dies. The solid die cuts a nominal thread with a consistent depth. Adjustable dies can be used to produce different classes of thread fit depending on the compression or release of the die.
