Electric Cars Autonomy: Advantages and disadvantages

Are you aware of the limited autonomy of electric cars? Do you know the implications of a electric vehicle purchase will bring to your life ? Are you aware of the concept of electric cars as well as  their advantages and disadvantages?

In an age where environmental concern is increasingly , there are more   sustainable solutions each day to reduce the impact of human beings in our planet  Electric mobility has been gaining share each day in the automotive industry, however  some doubts about this technology is still present in the consumers. In this article we explain how electric cars work and what their advantages and disadvantages are.

How do electric cars work?

An electric car has an electric motor that is powered by a rechargeable battery, which stores chemical energy, later converted into electrical energy.

What are the advantages of an electric car?

1. Zero emissions

Because these cars depend only on electricity, they do not have associated CO2 emissions. Therefore, in their use they are more sustainable  and ecological.

2. Lower maintenance costs

Maintenance costs tend to  be lower in electric cars compared to traditional ones, due to the smaller number of  mobile  engine components. In addition, they do not wear out so easily, since there is no need to change  oil or filters as often as it is with the traditional cars.

3. Fuel savings

As electric cars do not need fuel, there is significant savings, since the price of fuels is quite high.

4. Silent

Because they have electric motors, these vehicles are quieter compared to traditional alternatives, providing a smoother driving experience. This is due to the absence of moving parts in the engine, but also by the absence of the exhaust system, which is one of the main sources of noise in a car.

5. Tax incentives

There are some tax benefits in the acquisition of electric cars. There is also a specific stickers available  to  benefit from the  parking zone and parking areas for public charging of the batteries. Several cities also offer free parking for these vehicles, even if they are not being charged.

Although there are some advantages, there are also other factors to take into account that can be considered as disadvantages, which imply some slightly different care and routines.

What are the disadvantages of electric cars?

1. Price

The acquisition value of electric cars is generally higher than more traditional alternatives. The batteries themselves also have to be purchased and replaced after some time. They can also be rented instead of purchased. Despite the associated costs, the initial investment compensates in the long term in fuel or maintenance.

2. Autonomy

The limited autonomy of electric cars is one of the biggest obstacles to their purchase, since batteries do not allow an autonomy equal to or greater than the traditional cars. Most have a range of more than 200 km which compromise longer journeys. In addition, there is also a small number of charging points when compared to diesel and petrol filling stations.

3. Battery charging time

It is undeniable that electric cars are still relatively recent on the market and therefore the  charging process  is not so fast and accurate as expected.

Charging time can vary greatly depending on the type of battery, the type of supply, the weather conditions and even the length of the cable.

Depending on these factors a charge can last between 45min and 8h.

However, there  are more and more  solutions on the market dedicated to the charging of electric vehicles, such as superchargers, or more domestic solutions such as Wallboxes

Do you realize now that the advantages of electric cars outweigh the disadvantages?
